Court with Judge Ridley

District Court was heard Wednesday, July 31st, in Centerville. The Honorable District Judge Hal Ridley presided. Present to represent the state was Leon County District Attorney Hope Knight.


David Lee Halpain, who has been confined to the Leon County Jail, agreed to a plea deal in his case. Halpain plead guilty to a charge of Violation of a Protective Order 2 Times Within 12 Months. In exchange for the guilty plea, the judge sentenced Halpain to 10 years Deferred Adjudication and fined him $2,500. Halpain must also pay $750 to the Leon County Domestic Advocates Program, complete an Anger Management Program, and have no contact with the victim. The attorney for Halpain was Daniel Burkeen.

James Donald Tucker, Jr., plead guilty to a charge of Driving While Intoxicated, 3rd, or More. Tucker was sentenced to 2 years in the Texas Department of Corrections Jail. Tucker, who has been held in the county jail, will receive time served for that confinement. The attorney for Tucker was Raymond Sanders.


A trial date was set in the case against Leslie Bruce Grantland of Buffalo. Grantland, who has been held in the county jail on bonds totaling $50,000 is charged with Theft of Property and Burglary of a Habitation. Chris Grier is the attorney who is representing Grantland.

Grantland was also arraigned on a charge of Bail Jumping and Failure to Appear. A $50,000 bond was set for that charge.


No motions were made in the case against Timothy Paul Murname of Buffalo. Murname is charged with two counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance and is free on bonds that total $10,000. The attorney for Murname is Chris Grier.


Melvn Da?lon Hay, III, was in court but his attorney was not present. Hay is being held in the county jail on a $20,000 bond and is charged with Escape.

Ben Keo, of Jewett, was arraigned on a charge of Engaging is Organized Criminal Activity. Keo is free on a $10,000 bond.

La Quanita Kumar of Buffalo entered a not guilty plea to a charge of Engaging in Organized Criminal Activity. Kumar is free on a $10,000 bond. The judge appointed Attorney Daniel Burkeen to represent Kumar.

Jimmy Shane Vandyke of Marquez was not present for his arraignment on a charge of Theft. The judge was informed that Vandyke, who had been free on a $7,500 bond, is currently in federal custody. The bond was revoked and no new bond was reset.
