Town Café Established in 1946

TOWN CAFE -- Brandy Monthei, Cheryl Cole, Larry Dickey, Tammy Hiles and Georgia Peach. Not pictured is Bobbie Jo Kirkley.

This week?s travels took this reporter to a Leon County Landmark, the Town Caf? in Centerville Texas.

Upon entering the town meeting place and good food establishment I was greeted by the friendly staff. I then sat down at a ? round table ?discussion headed up by owner, Larry Dickey, businessman, Keith Gardner and lifelong resident, Mr. Homer Coleman.

Folks - Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter have nothing on these men as far as communicating the history and knowledge of this location and surrounding Leon County points of interest.

W. D. Lewis and his wife Angie opened the business in 1946. Current owner Larry Dickey has owned the Town Caf? for the past 3 years after purchasing it from the previous owner Ms. Kathy Johnson who had operated this thriving business for approximately 20 years. The business has been in existence in the same location for 73 years.

Homer Coleman and his father, Dewitt Coleman were two of the original customers that walked through the doors when it opened in 1946. The original business included a barber shop in the north side room and was a 24-hour bus stop/ cafe that served good food to travelers motoring between Houston and Dallas on old 75.

Being a bus stop/ cafe and midway point brought many celebrities through its doors and generated many stories and tales as well. Notables included wrestlers Gorgeous George, Pepper Gomez, and the Von Erich?s that charmed and gave gifts to the staff and patrons on their travels between Houston and Dallas.

Current celebrities at the Town Caf? include business people, cowboys, tradesmen, and town folk that meet at 7 am on a daily basis to share news, history, and stories about current local and national events. The caf? is open 7 days a week from 7am to 2pm only closing for Christmas and New Year?s.

Owner, Larry Dickey starts staying open until 9 pm on Friday featuring steaks, fish, and a new menu item - deep fried hamburgers.

Take my word for it the chicken fried steak is awesome - I have YEARS of experience in this area.

Stop by and say hello to Larry and let the loyal staff, Georgia Boles (floor manager), Brandy, Crystal, Bobbie Jo (kitchen manager), Cheryl, and Tammy serve you awesome food and give you outstanding service.

If you leave hungry it will be your fault.
