Remembering Ed Phillips

Funeral services for Edward Lee ?Ed? Phillips, 71, of Buffalo, were conducted Wednesday, December 12, 2018 at the Cowboy Church of Leon County in Centerville. Rev. Keith Bowman officiated, assisted Pastor Jack Smith and Pastor Tuffy Loftin. Interment was at Cross O Cemetery.

Phillips was born March 4, 1947 in Houston, the first of three sons born to Clayton and Dorothy (Colburn) Phillips, and died Saturday, December 8, 2018 at his home surrounded by his family. Ed grew up in the Aldine area in North Houston and graduated from Aldine High School, Class of ?65. Following graduation, Ed attended Texas A&M and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science, Class of ?69. While attending A&M, Ed was very active on judging teams including livestock, meat and wool judging teams and traveled with these teams competing all over the U.S.

Ed met and married the love of his life, LaNell, and because they both wanted to live in the country, he attended Sam Houston State University and earned his Masters Degree and teaching certification in Ag Education. He did his student teaching at Buffalo High School and was hired as Ag teacher for the fall of 1972. He taught Ag Science at Buffalo High School for the next thirty-four years and retired in 2006. Besides teaching, Ed was a cattle rancher and auctioneer. He went to auctioneering school shortly after graduation from A&M and continued auctioneering to the end of his life for numerous organizations including Dallas Safari Club, Houston Safari Club, Ducks Unlimited, Coastal Conservation Association, Delta Waterfowl and numerous youth livestock shows and other non-profit organizations.

Ed enjoyed fishing with his grandkids on the lake and was able to hunt in Canada, New Zealand and South Africa.

Ed was preceded in death by his father, Clayton L. Phillips and his brother and sister-in-law, Jesse & Frances Phillips.

Survivors include mother, Dorothy Philips of Aldine; wife, LaNell Phillips of Buffalo; son, Sloan Phillips & wife, Veronica, of Spring; daughter, LaNei Cadenhead of Centerville; brother, Rick Phillips & wife, Robin, of Magnolia; grandsons, Trevor Phillips & Jake Cadenhead and granddaughter, Maddy Cadenhead, as well as, numerous nephews, nieces and extended family and friends.

Pallbearers included his ringmen for many auctions, Dixon Davis, Strawberry Clifton, Justin George, Nick Hinze, Jim Bob Bigon and Larry Schatte. Honorary pallbearers included Rick Goode, Robbie Robinson and Jeff Beshears.
