BISD in Full Swing for 2018-2019

The Buffalo ISD Trustees met Monday, September 17th, for their regular monthly meeting. All were present except Trustee Bobby Fishbeck. President Jack Helmcamp presided.

High School Principal Corey Hickerson reported on activities on his campus. Hickerson described the tutorial plan that teachers and students are using to help keep all students successful in all classes. ?Accountability,? said Hickerson, ?is the key.? Students are also motivated by a program that offers rewards for best attendance by class.

BISD Band Director Jeff Villarreal reported on the band program and described the practice work done by students this summer as well as trips taken to expose the students to what other bands are doing. Band students participated in the recent Buffalo Stampede Parade and are preparing for competitions later this school year.

BISD Athletic Director Brandon Houston gave an overview of the current sports program on both the junior high and the high school campuses. Students numbers are high in participation with football and with volleyball as well as the cross country program.

BISD Superintendent Lacy Freeman reported on improvements made at the campuses. The ISS-DEAP building has had additional lighting installed. At the lower junior high, the modification to the entrance to the building to make it more secure has been completed. The next modifications for security purposes will be at the elementary campus. Freeman reported a current total enrollment of 962 students. This number includes the Head Start Program.

Trustees approved the members on the Instructional Materials Committee. This committee reviews new books as subjects come up for adoption and makes recommendations for the best selection.

Approval was given to replace a lawnmower at an cost of $11,051. Also approved was the purchase of a new school bus at a price of $97,895. Freeman said in order to keep the current fleet of 13 or 14 buses in dependable operation, a new bus should be added every couple of years.

A list of items were approved for a surplus sale of property. And approval was given for the renewal of the E-Rate Contract for 2018-2019.

The board held a 20 minute closed session to discuss security improvements for BISD. Trustees returned to open session and reported no action taken, and no action was taken in open session, and the meeting was adjourned.
