LCRTA Shows Appreciation To Leon County Newspapers

APPRECIATION -- Bobbye Bullock presents Mary Ann Vaughn, the publisher of The Buffalo Express, a certificate of appreciation of her support of the LCRTA.

Leon County Retired Teachers Association held their last meeting in Centerville on Wednesday, May 24 at the Municipal Building. An annual salad luncheon was served at 12:00 pm with representatives of the Leon County local newspapers as guests. The meeting room was decorated in red, white and blue for Memorial Day in honor and remembrance of those who served in the armed forces and for those who gave their lives for our country.

Certificates of Appreciation from LCRTA were presented to representatives from the local county newspapers. Those able to attend were Sylvia Moss from the Normangee Star; Katharine Snider from the Jewett Messenger; Hank Hargrave from the Centerville News and Mac Shadix from the Buffalo Press. Mary Ann Vaughn from the Buffalo Express was unable to attend. Members present were glad to have the opportunity to visit with and thank the representatives for their coverage of the Leon County Retired Teachers Association activities.

A short business meeting was held. Vice-President, Lavern Manning, presented Verdine H. Perry, LCRTA president, a Certificate of Appreciation and gift for her services to LCRTA. The 2017-2018 Membership drive has begun and letters have been sent for membership renewals. The state TRTA dues are $35.00 and local LCRTA dues, $10.00, for a total of $45.00. Members having perfect attendance for the 2016-2017 year received Certificates of Perfect Attendance and thanks for their loyalty to LCRTA. Those receiving the certificates were Bobbye Bullock, Lavern Manning, Birdene Perry, Verdine H. Perry and Judy Dorsett.

The ?No Bake Sale? Spring 2017 Fund Raiser was very successful and over $1000.00 was donated by LCRTA members. The fund raiser makes it possible for LCRTA to continue as an active participating organization in our county and to provide scholarship monies to Leon County seniors planning to attend college and major in education. The 2016-2017 LCRTA scholarship winners were Toryn S. Cox from Leon ISD, $500.00; Sarah L. King from Centerville ISD, $400.00; Saqqara Forte from Oakwood ISD, $300.00. Congratulations to all of the LCRTA scholarship winners.

LCRTA will meet again on Wednesday, September 27 at 12:00 pm in Centerville at the Municipal Building. LCRTA is looking forward to another successful year.
